Our next stop was Messina, Sicily, a port on the narrow opening, called the Strait of Messina, between Sicily and the Italian mainland.  During World War II, Messina was famous for a race between American General Patton and British General Montgomery to take the city. Patton won.

One of the early meetings to plan the unification of Europe took place in Messina.
